I love spontaneity :)

Great day today.  The day started perfectly - I slept in.  Got to enjoy some leisure time with a book for a while this morning, then, I got a phone call from my friend Paul Magee.  I had not seen Paul since he was the best man in my wedding over 5 years ago.  I lost his contact info, but I recently reconnected with Paul through Facebook.  I was planning on calling him at some point in the day, but he beat me to the punch.  We started talking about getting together sometime soon, and he suggested today - I love this kind of spontaneity!  Sooooo, Paul made the drive from Cary, and Lisa & I went to dinner with him at Elizabeth's Pizza, and then we had coffee back at our place.  I couldn't have asked for a better Saturday :)

Fall Update

"Fall Update" - LOL... Funny how I haven't posted anything since May.  Well, Lisa is now 25 weeks along, so only 2 weeks away from entering her third trimester.  Since the last post, we've found out that we're having a girl, and we're going to name her Kaylee Marie Ziarnik.  It's finally setting in for me that I am going to be a father.  Its exciting and scary at the same time.  Fortunately, a lot of the big items we'll need are taken care of - my folks bought a crib & dresser for us this summer.  Also, we were able to find an affordable glider/ottoman combo @ Target.  One of Lisa's co-workers sold us her Graco stroller for $50.  We've picked up some other great stuff at consignment sales & through Craigslist.

Due to Lisa being so far along in the pregnancy, I've had to pitch in on more of the housework than normal, so I've had less time to be involved in the 360Voice forum community.  Less time to game as well, but I actually haven't missed gaming as much as I thought that I might.  However, I have been reading a bit more lately.  I'm not in much of a writing mood at the moment, so this is all you get for now.

More to follow...

Lost Season Finale (spoilers)

Wow.  Great 2 hour finale.  I must say though, JJ Abrams has done it again.  He has once again left us all hanging with more questions than we have answers.  We finally have the answer to who was in the casket from the Season 3 finale - Locke.   Now I'm wondering why there was a different name on the casket?  How/why was Locke back in the US?  Wasn't he supposed to be the new leader on the island?  It was never explained to the viewers exactly how it is that Benjamin Linus went from being deep below ground on the island to being in the desert in the Middle East either.  Or how he (Ben) plans to bring Jack & co. (as well as the late John Locke) back to the island... Or WHY he wants to bring them back to the island.  IS Hurley really crazy, or is it all just a part of the coverup act?  Why would Sun want to help Charles Widmore in any manner?

Obviously there's more to Charlotte than what Abrams is letting us know right now.  I guess the same could be said of Miles as well.  Interesting that they both want to stay on the island, but for different reasons (I presume).

Now on to the supernatural... Just who exaclty is Christian Sheppard anyway???  Yes, I know that he is Jack & Claire's Father.  But is he too a native of the Island? Just a guess.  I'm starting to think that the guy is inhuman.  Could Christian possibly be "Jacob"???  If not, then who/what is "Jacob" anyway?  Another thing that bugs me is that we just finished the 4th season, and we still know next to nothing about that smoke creature that was appearing as early as the first season.  All we really learned about it this season is that Ben was able to control it by some means unknown to the viewer.

Sometimes I wonder why I ever started watching this show.  I have this love/hate relationship with it.  All the questions bug me, but at the same time, I'm completely addicted to the show.  I absolutely cannot stop watching it.

I'm curious about hearing the thoughts/opinions of others who watched tonight's finale.  What do YOU think?

Stanley Cup Finals, Game 3

Just going to post some of my thoughts as I watch the game tonight.  I notice that Pittsburgh has replaced Kris Letang with Darryl Sydor on the blueline tonight.  Sydor brings the experience of having won 2 Stanley Cups, and can provide some great outlet passes from the back end, but somehow I don't see this lineup change as having a huge impact on the team right now.  What the Penguins really need right now is a stellar performance from Marc-Andre Fleury.  He needs to steal a game for them if they are to have any chance at getting back into this series.  Times posted are according to time remaining in each period.

1st Period:

(12:05, 1st period) No goals yet but this is looking exciting so far.  Pittsburgh really is showing some desperation,  as well they should be.  Ozzie has already had to make 1 decent save.  Shots are 4-1 Detroit.

(8:25, 1st period) Mike Emrick (NBC announcer) states that Detroit's defenseman Brad Stuart is currently the leading scorer in the series with 3 points (1G, 2A).  There's a shocker.  Who would have thought that in a series featuring Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Datsyuk, Zetterberg & Lidstrom, that a stay at home defenseman like Stuart would be the leading scorer after 2 games?

(7:15, 1st period) Shots are now 7-1 Detroit.  More of the same?

(6:35, 1st period) Dan Cleary one-times a shot after some tic-tac-toe style puck movement during a Detroit powerplay.  Fleury makes a timely save.  This is starting to look like another clinic on puck possession by Detroit.

(2:35, 1st period) Sidney Crosby scores the first goal of the game after Brad Stuart turns the puck over to Marian Hossa in his own end.  Hossa moves the puck to Crosby, who's initial shot is blocked, but he scores on the rebound.  The shutout streak has ended.  This is an important goal for Pittsburgh not just because they scored a goal, but because it was Crosby, their captain, who scored.

(:40, 1st period) Brian Rafalski trips Evgeni Malkin & gets sent to the sin bin.  Pittsburgh powerplay.  Detroit must kill off this penalty in order to regain control of the game.  If Pittsburgh scores here it will be a HUGE shift of momentum.

End of the 1st period: Malkin fans on a shot in the final seconds of the first period.  Had he connected, it would surely have resulted in a powerplay goal, and more importantly, a 2-goal lead for the Pens.  Right now, if I'm Mike Babcock, I'm glad that its the end of the period.  There is a lot of energy in Mellon Arena tonight, and the Pens are starting to look like they are in this one.  I'm sure there's talk going on in the Detroit locker room about how its only 1 goal, and how there's still another 40 minutes of hockey left to play.  Detroit dominated for the majority of the period, and if the Pens think that this one is in the bag after 20, then they've got another thing coming.  As a side note, Niklas Kronwall leads all players in ice time having played 9:17 in the period, and Henrik Zetterberg leads all forwards with 8:47.

Start of the 2nd period:

Pittsburgh still has over a minute of powerplay time.  20 seconds into the period Crosby rings one off the crossbar & out of play. (Whew!)

(17:58, 2nd period) Even though the Rafalski penalty has expired, it still looks like a Pittsburgh powerplay.  Kronwall gets called for hauling down Ryan Malone, so another powerplay for Pittsburgh.

(17:26, 2nd period)  Sidney Crosby scores on the ensuing powerplay, picking up a rebound & stuffing it in from the left side of Osgood.  Assists go to Hossa & Malone.  Great news if you're a Pittsburgh fan.

(15:08, 2nd period)  Crosby is playing with such heart right now and it really is paying off for him - not just on the scoreboard either.  The rest of the team is rallying around his inspiring play, and in the first 5 minutes of the period its been all Pittsburgh.  This does not look at all like the same team that just went scoreless through 2 games in Detroit.

(13:33, 2nd period) Pittsburgh has matched Detroit's shot total for the game now.  The teams are tied with 12 each.

(12:10, 2nd period) Tyler Kennedy throws a late check on Brent Lebda after an icing whistle.  No penalty is called.

(11:00, 2nd period) Hal Gill is called for cross checking Tomas Holmstrom, so Detroit gets a powerplay.  Also, Pavel Datsyuk, of all people just layed out Ryan Malone at the blue line.  Malone is slow to get up.  Why is Pavel Datsyuk leading the Red Wings in hits???  This is just as bizarre as Brad Stuart leading both teams in scoring after 2 games

(10:34, 2nd period) Brooks Orpik pushes Jiri Hudler into the Pittsburgh goalcage, dislodging it a moment before the puck went in.  No goal.

(8:55, 2nd period) Detroit manages a total of 1 shot on their powerplay.  TV timeout.  I'm realizing that one of the biggest differences I'm seeing in the Penguin's play tonight is that they are pursuing the puck much more aggressively than they did in games 1 & 2.  Michel Therrien has his forwards forechecking with a fervor unseen in the series thus far.

(7:02, 2nd period)  Hal Gill just can't get enough of Tomas Holmstrom tonight.  He just took another crosschecking penalty, so Detroit gets their 4th powerplay.

(5:12, 2nd period) Johan Franzen scores his league leading 13th goal of the playoffs on the powerplay, making an inside-outside move on Rob Scuderi before stuffing the puck past Fleury.

The final 5 minutes of the 2nd period sees a lot of back & forth play - the teams are pretty much trading shots at this point in the game.  This is still anybody's game.  Pittsburgh leads in shots at the end of the period 19-18.

Third Period:

(16:18, 3rd period) SAVE OF THE GAME! A sprawling Chris Osgood reaches back to stop the puck from trickling across the line for what would have been a third goal for the Pens.  This particluar play aside, Detroit has been much more active offensively this period.  They're getting back to playing their puck-possession style that has been their trademark.  This is still anybody's game.

(12:39, 3rd period)  Adam Hall scores a goal from behind the net, banking the puck off of Osgood as there is a scramble in front.  What bugs me about this goal is that only seconds prior Andreas Lilja could have touched the puck up for an icing call.  At the last moment, instead of touching the puck, he turns & looks over his shoulder at the Penguin persuing him.  This results in Lilja getting slammed into the glass, and a turnover, and eventually a Pittsburgh goal.

(8:45, 3rd period)  I don't think there's been a whistle since the Hall goal.  The action is happening faster than I can type it.  Constant back & forth play.  One of the Wings hit a post (it looked like a goal to me).  Constant end-to-end action.  We finally have the finals series that NHL fans were hoping for.

(6:39, 3rd period) First whistle since the Hall goal.  Bodies are flying everywhere.  The coaches are screaming at their players in order to be heard above the roar of the crowd.

(6:23, 3rd period) Mikael Samuelsson scores on a snap shot from the boards near the top of the circle.  I don't know if Fleury saw it or not, but suddenly its a 1-goal game again.

(5:50, 3rd period) Holmstrom goes down on the ice after Hal Gill takes him down (yes, again) away from the play & sends him sliding into the Pittsburgh net.  Somehow, there is no penalty called on the play (???)

(4:16, 3rd period) Pittsburgh penalty to Evgeni Malkin  - 2 minutes for hooking.  Trailing 3-2, Detroit gets another powerplay.  This is clutch time.

(2:46, 3rd period) Filpula redirects a shot on net for a decent scoring chance, but no goal.

(2:17, 3rd period) Malkin's penalty is over.

End of game.  3-2 Pittsburgh.  Detroit still leads 2 games to 1 in the series.  We've officially got ourselves a series.  The last 5 minutes of this game made for a real nail-biter.  Though I'm disappointed that the Wings lost the game, I can honestly say that this was a great hockey game to watch.  Next game is in Pittsburgh on Saturday night, but I'll probably not be blogging that one.  I'm probably going to be watching that one from a bar somewhere, downing some cold beers with my buddy Jason.

That's it from me for tonight ;)

Babies-R-Us!

Time to try to stay on top of the blog (again).

Lisa is now about 8 weeks into her first trimester! Yep! We're pregnant!!! We found out about 3 weeks ago, and had been trying to get pregnant since January. Her estimated due date is January 2nd, but I'm sort of hoping that the kid comes in late December, that way we can claim it on our 2008 taxes Open-mouthed . The first ultrasound is scheduled for this upcoming Friday. I'm still somewhat in shock. Not because Lisa's pregnant, but because I am going to be a father. Its sometimes a bit overwhelming. Anyhow...

Today we went to Babies-R-Us, as well as Target, and started working on the baby registry. What a mind-boggling experience - Babies R Us makes my head spin. There's just so much stuff there!

Long Time, No Update!

Dang, it has been a LONG time since I've posted anything here. At this point I'm not even sure that there is anyone who looks at my site anymore. Much has happened in the last couple of months - too much to try to cover in one post.

A few highlights:

- Lisa & I are thoroughly enjoying being homeowners. Next Wednesday will mark 5 months since we bought the condo. It took a little while, but it is finally feeling like HOME.

- In November the company I work for got bought out by our biggest competitor. As you can no doubt imagine, we're experiencing some "growing pains". I think whenever you have 2 large companies merging, things always seem to take longer than expected. My store IS remaining open (thank GOD), and the local store that we had been competing with will soon be closing, with their employees coming to work at my store. No sense in having both stores continuing to operate 5 miles from each other.

- Lisa & I got to spend Christmas with her family in Vista, CA. The last time we were there for Christmas was in 2003 when we were still living there. We were pleasantly surprised to find that airfare is relatively cheap on Christmas Day.

Tonight we get to embarass ourselves bowling with the other couples from our small group. Perhaps I will snap a few pics to post...

That's all for now - more to come later!

Plan B...

Well, as it turns out, we were indeed over the salary cap for the state bond mortgage that we were hoping to get (see previous entry for more details).  Although we were both really concerned about how much money we were going to have to pay on our monthly payments with a different mortgage, it looks like things are going to be ok.  We're going to end up w/ a 80/20 w/ a fixed interest rate on both loans (30 yrs.).  Though the interest rate is going to be a bit higher, our monthly payments will only be about $37 more than they would have been w/ the original plan.  I think we can find an extra $37 to pay each month ;)

This weekend is the last one that we'll be spending in our apartment.  We're both getting really excited about finally owning our own place.  Monday is the walkthrough, and I still need to call all the utility companies to get everything transferred over!

Last night my friend Jason came over & the 3 of us (Jason, Lisa & myself) all watched 300 & dined on a gourmet dinner of pizzas from Sam's Club.  We all liked it - it looks nice in 720p (downloaded through Xbox Live).  Not something I feel like buying, but it was pretty cool.  Better than I originally thought it would be.

Ironically, although I got my Xbox 360 back on Tuesday, the only disc I've put in it so far is Guitar Hero 2.  I'm so addicted to that game.  I bought BioShock on Wednesday, but I still haven't even taken the cellophane wrapping off of it since I've been playing so much Guitar Hero 2 Tongue out

Something Jason noticed when he was over here last night that I thought was cool:  Apparently the console that MS shipped back to me isn't a refubished unit.  Jason saw that there is a manufacturing date on the back of it that says 8/10/2007!  I really didn't think I was going to be getting a brand-new console back when I sent mine in for repairs, but I'm not complaining.  After the reports I've heard of people getting faulty refurbs shipped to them, this pleases me greatly Smile

$94

For those who don't know, we're buying a condo & our closing date is August 31st, which is less than 2 weeks away.  We have this thing in North Carolina where the state makes provisions for 1st time home buyers to get a special interest rate on their mortgage.  This is casually referred to by the lenders as the NC State Bond mortgage.  The thing is, the state has imposed strict income limits in order to qualify for it, and if your income exceeds the set amount, then you can't get this type of mortgage.  We locked in at a very nice 5.875% interest rate a couple months back, and at the time we had about $1500 leeway before we hit the ceiling for the income limit.

Well, more money is not always a good thing apparently.  We had to submit our last month's worth of paystubs to the lender in order for the state to verify our income, and apparently we are now $94 above the ceiling.  I guess it came through a combination of overtime & various bonuses in the last couple months.  The ruling wasn't final, but the lender was telling me that a second underwriter is examining it, so I'll hear tomorrow whether or not we are going to be able to qualify now.  If we don't qualify for this particular type of loan, then we'll end up having to examine other loan options & make a decision very quickly on what kind of mortgage to get.  The loan officer is telling me that since we have exceptionally good credit scores & a great debt-to-credit ratio, there are a number of loans we can qualify for, and it may end up only costing an extra $30-$40 on our monthly mortgage payment.  The only thing I forgot to ask is whether that small of an increase would still be a conventional, fixed rate mortgage or if it would be some ARM-bs.  I guess we'll find out tomorrow.  If we can still get a 30yr fixed rate for less than $50 extra on top of what we'd planned on paying, I can deal with that.  No biggie.  BUT, if it is an ARM that she was talking about then that could end up costing substantially more money in the long run.  So.... We're both a little concerned right now.  We're hoping & praying that this isn't going to end up costing us much more than we'd planned.

That puts a little bit of a damper on the exciting aspect of tomorrow:  Getting my Xbox 360 back!  Back to some Guitar Hero 2 action, and Shadowrun.  Also, my friend Jason is supposed to be coming by one day this week.  I'm going to download 300 in HD from the Live Marketplace & pick up some pizzas for a "guys night".  Neither of us has seen 300 yet, so we're both looking forward to seeing it.

Shopping for stuff for the condo

After church today we went out & did some shopping for stuff for our new condo (which we will be moving into on Labor Day weekend).  Although I'm excited about (finally) owning our own place, and I'm excited about having nice, new stuff for it, it can be mind-boggling trying to figure out what colors/designs you want for each room.  Or, more specifically, what theme do we want in each bathroom, and will it fit with the color of paint that we want to use, or should we perhaps choose a different color paint instead.  then, we have to make sure that we agree :)

If I were rich, I'd hire an interior designer to come up w/ themes to show me & then, like Jean-Luc, I'd tell him/her to "Make it so."
I frickin' hate HGTV.  I watch all these home decorating shows with Lisa, and they all make interior decorating seem so easy.  Especially that dang so-called "Design on a Dime".  Let me tell you - you can't design on a dime.  Or even a grand for that matter.  Part of what enables them to get by on the $1000 budget on that show is the fact that they make often their own stuff.  That's great for TV, but let me tell you - that is not where my creativity lies.  You see, "Designer's Challenge" is more up my alley, or, at least, it would be if I weren't among the economically challenged.  On that show the homeowners don't do anything.  They sit on their affluent lexus-driving posteriors & let various designers try to persuade them to pick that particular designer's plan over the others.  The homeowners make a decision, and then somebody else does the shopping & decorating.  That is my idea of interior decorating :)

Now, back to reality....

PICTURES!!!!  Here, for your viewing pleasure, are some pics of the stuff we've been buying & a sofa that we haven't bought yet, but probably will very soon.  See that hot chick holding up the handtowel?  She's mine Wink

GH2 GOODNESS!

Last night I followed my good friend & coworker Jason over to his place for some Guitar Hero 2 action. It has been 2 weeks since I sent my ailing Xbox 360 in for repairs (RRoD), so I've been missing out on playing this game lately. Couple that with the fact that Jason purchased GH2 right after my console went down & he keeps talking to me about the game at work, and I'm going through some serious withdrawals, lol. We played co-op mode for about 5 hours last night & plowed through a ton of songs. We consider ourselves to be intermediate players, so we stuck to medim difficulty, but still had some hiccups on a couple songs (Jordan, YYZ). We were able to get a handful of the co-op achievements (JOY!), and had an absolute blast in the process.

I remember when the original Guitar Hero game came out for the PS2 - I thought it looked absolutely ridiculous. The idea of trying to play a game that simulated rocking out on an undersized, geeky-looking plastic guitar seemed laughable at the time. Then Guitar Hero 2 came out on the 360, and several of my friends over at 360Voice started playing it & telling me about how cool it is. Then my cousin rented the first GH game & brought it over w/ his PS2. After playing it for a while, I got hooked. Originally, I balked at the $89.99 price tag on the game, but I now think it is well worth it. The replay value on the game is amazing. As a musician, I can honestly say that the game does a great job of simulating that feeling of pride that you get after successfully pulling off some wicked chops. Its been a while since I had that feeling performing on stage, but I feel it every time I play Guitar Hero 2.

In the middle of typing this, I noticed that I received an email from Microsoft telling me that my 360 is shipping out today! I imagine I'll probably get it back either Tuesday or Wednesday next week, so I'll be rocking out again soon enough :D

The total turnaround time from the when my box went down & I called support until when I get my console back will be about 3 weeks. Not bad, cosidering that when you call support they tell you that it will be 4-6 weeks from the time that they receive your console until you get it back. Plus, if I read the email correctly, it sounds like they repaired my console & they're shipping it back, as opposed to sending me another refurbished unit. No complaints here :)

Apples to Apples... and Audits

Just got back home a little while ago from a get-together w/ some friends.  Our friends Luke & Amy made enchiladas & hosted a game night at their place.  We played a game called Apples to Apples which was really fun.  Its one of those party games that doesn't involve much (if any) skill, but gets everybody talking & laughing with each other.  In some ways it reminded me of Balderdash

In work related news, I started cross-training today to learn how to perform the job of our accounts receivable clerk.  The lady who has the job right now is cutting her hours so that she's off on Fridays & only works a half-day on Thursdays, so somebody has to take care of her stuff during those times.  I'm actually glad that I was asked about it, since I was the accounts receivable clerk in the last office I worked at (different company).  Its really not too different where I am now, its just a matter of learning how to do it the way that Keystone wants it done, using their computer setup.  The lady who has been doing it has been with the company for 20 years & will probably be retiring sometime in the near future, so I get the feeling that I'm being groomed for her job.

Everything was just peachy today until around 3pm, when we got tipped off by someone in the company who told us that our company's chief internal auditor will be paying us a visit tomorrow.  Everybody is all stressed about it, even though its probably just a routine inspection/audit.  This will be the first time that he's been to our store in almost 5 years, and the first time since I started working there in Feb 2005.  My GM has only had the GM position for 2 years now, so this is his first visit from this guy since becoming the big cheese of the Greensboro store.  I think that my boss's stress has trickled down to everyone else under him.  I was feeling stressed earlier, since I was rushing to get a bunch of paperwork & reports filled out & ready for tomorrow, but now I'm not too worried.  I've done my part.

Before & After

At Lisa's suggestion, the beard has disappeared!!!  Although she liked the way it looked, it wasn't the most comfortable to her.  Since I like kissing my wife, I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and lose it.  I decided I'd throw some "before & after" pics up here, as well as change out my profile pic here & on my Twitter .  I think I look younger without the beard, but, more importantly, I look thinner Wink

EDIT: For more "before" pics w/ the beard, check out the 2 "Family Reunion" pics that I've posted (see the photo box to the right of the blog, the album is at the bottom of the list).

Uneventful weekend

Sometimes an uneventful, boring weekend can be a really good thing.  Last weekend was super busy, including a 14-hour painting day at my parents' house.  I had every intention of catching up on the week's laundry yesterday, but I was lazy.  Instead we ended up vegging out & watching TV & reading most of the day.  I got a bit further through The Widow of the South, and then we watched Die Hard With a Vengance, which Lisa had never seen before.  I think that's my favorite out of all the Die Hard movies (well, I haven't seen Live Free or Die Hard yet).

Dinner was a treat - we went to the local vietnamese restaurant, "Pho Vien Huong", and had some pho for dinner.  For those of you poor souls who have never experienced pho (pronounced "fuh"), I highly recommend it.  Its basically a broth with rice noodles & some meat (we like it w/ beef) as well as various veggies - fresh cilantro, basil, bean sprouts, lemon, onions, jalepeno & hot sauce (optional).  Its something that Lisa introduced me to before we got married.

Today I had to help my folks move some furniture around their house (really exciting, isn't it?) since they've got a company coming in to lay down some wood & tile flooring.  Perhaps once we get home I'll get around to doing some laundry.

On a completely unrelated note, in regard to waiting on word from Microsoft about my ailing 360, I feel like a little kid waiting for christmas to come.  No email from them yet.  My buddy Jason, who I just introduced to Guitar Hero 2, still has my copy of GH2 at his apartment.  Every day when I look at what my friends are playing on Xbox.com, I see his gamertag logged in playing GH2 :(   He just surpassed my gamerscore in that game (250).  Wednesday night I'll be going to his place & we'll be going after some GH2 co-op achievements.  At the time when my box RRoD'ed on me, I had just completed the Easy Tour (w/ 5-stars on every song) and had just begun the Medium Tour.  Jason has already passed me & is telling me about all the cool songs he has unlocked (War Pigs, Sweet Child 'O Mine, Freebird, etc.)

Yeah, I've got it baaaaad.

Let's all hold hands & sing Kum-By-Yah & pray to Uncle Bill (Gates) that my 360 returns to me quickly.

Welcome to my space :)

1st entry!!! Woo HOO!!!!

I'm finally FREE from the cesspool that is "MySpace".  You know, I never really felt like it really was MY space - with all those obtrusive ads dropped right smack in the middle of my page, many of which were on the risque side of things.  I'm much happier with the way this place is set up.

I'd like to give an advance welcome to my friends from 360Voice who may be stumbling onto my Live Space :)  Here, you guys (& girls) will be able to see a little bit more about just who "Major Flankage" really is.  Hopefully I won't scare anyone away /jk.

This is a work in progress, since its been a while since I've maintained a personal webpage/blog, but I'm going to try to update the blog fairly regularly, and I plan to add some more feature modules into this puppy before too long as well.

Peace out!

Adam
